Smith & Wesson Front Orange Sight insert

Hello once again. I purchased a smith 57 on gunbroker today and in a closer inspection of the pictures it looks like it is missing a front sight insert.

Should I say something or is that insert a big deal? Here is the auction, please let me know what you think.

    Well, I thought it may have been white, I thought I had seen some white ones. The guy had 100+ feedback.

    www.brownells.com/ part # 080-068-000 - about $50 for a kit that is enough material & instructions for over 200 inserts.

    Sight or no, You got a scream'en deal for a '57 Smith

    I have a 686 that the front insert has been removed so that a tritium sight could be glued in its place. Probably where that one went and then the tritium insert fell out.

    The seller should have mentioned the missing insert in the guns description.... shame on him. He should know the condition of pieces he sells.

    I would contact him and inquire. See if he will accept a lesser amount, whatever it would cost to fix.

    For the condition of that gun from what the pictures show, you got a fair deal. Yes, the insert is missing, but you can fashion one out of just about anything to make that gun look sharp, and it is not all that hard. Brass, and Aluminum come to mind as well as many different colors of thermoplastic material.

    I have to disagree. The buyer in this case seen the photo's, and the gun is in fair shape, but not great to start with. The buyer did bid anyway, and at the worst, it would take the buyer about a half hour to fashion an insert using a small file and a vise. Its not hard to do. At risk of negative FB...certailnly this honor would go to the one with the least feed backs which happens to be the buyer.

    Moral of the story is, know what you are looking at, and ask questions BEFORE bidding, then know what you are bidding on/buying. It saves a lot of this after the sale questions.

    Lefty's right, he should have described the damage. It's not real obviously in the photos.

    But, you DID bid on a gun with only fair photos, no details in the description, & from a seller who has no stated refund policy.

    It's an inexpensive repair for a gunsmith. I'd get a local estimate & ask the seller if he's willing to pay for it. You may have to eat the cost if he declines. For the sake of keeping a good FB record, I would expect him to pay it, though.
