    In front of my trigger guard are the letters, U S C Co. and under that is 9-13-93 # 218. Can anyone help me with the letters and numbers? Number on Winchester is 14355.

    USC Co. possibly stands for United States Cartridge Company and 9-13-93 possibly stands for September, 13, 1893. I'm not sure about 218. Perhaps your Model 1892 went to the USC Co. as a test rifle for their various loads and 218 is USC Co.'s asset number assigned to this test rifle.

    I think the latter part of 1893 might be in the ballpark for when serial number 14355 was manufactured, but I'm not positive.

    Since a Winchester Model 1892 with serial number 14355 can be lettered through the Cody Firearm Museum Records Service, you should consider obtaining a letter for your Model 1892. That way, the letter's Warehouse shipping date might substantiate the possibility of this rifle being stamped with "9-13-93" as an authentic date.

    eejuri: Welcome to the forum. I have a "brother"s to your 1892 USC Co. rifle. Mine is a 32 W.C.F. (32-20) full magazine, and a take-down. SN 225,269. On the left side of the receiver is hand stamped "U.S.C.Co. #271 12-8-1903. I assumed that this was a U.S. Cartridge Co. test rifle. I had the rifle lettered, and found out it is original, and that it left the warehouse on 12-7-1903, or one day before the stamping on the receiver. New Haven is just a little over a stones throw from Lowell Mass. where the U.S. Cartridge Co. plant was. My rifle is in very good condition. The barrel is excellent as is the bore. The receiver has 90% blue. The wood has minor handling marks. All in all a wonderful collector piece, and an excellent shooter.
    I sure would like to find an inventory of USC Cos. test firearms. At one time they had a world class firearms collection that they had to liquidate to stave off financial problems. Ultimately they were purchased by another powder manufacturer. But their test rifles were not part of the firearms museum sale.

    Thank you to Old- Colts and merrbarb for the info on my Winchester 1892 44-40. I shot this rifle years ago and was pretty excited on the first 5 rounds, how smooth and powerful it was. Since then, about 20 years, it has been in a cabinet and now in my gun safe. There is not much bluing as it shows signs of heavy wear although the rifle is in good shape. I think I am going to obtain a letter from Cody F M R Service, which is a good idea for the records. Thanks again and will let you know about Cody's. eejuri

It will be very nice if it corroborates the possibility that your Model 1892 was shipped early enough that it might have been sent to the United States Cartridge Company in time to be stamped 9-13-93!
