Automag II 22 WMR UPDATE
Friend asked me to look at this pistol. Hammer won't stay cocked. Can get it to catch (barely) if I pull out hard on the trigger, but the trigger return spring seems to be OK. Haven't had it apart yet except field strip. It is very, very dirty so that'll be first order of business. It is an old Irwindale model, H48xxx series serial number. Your thoughts?

Found parts list in my Brownell's (have an account there) and am familiar with Numrich so maybe I'll get lucky once I figure out what's going on. Any reference to disassembly/reassembly instructions (beyond cleaning take down) would be helpful, none listed in any of my books or owners manual.
Got it all cleaned up. Sear spring was gone and trigger spring looked suspicious, one grip screw missing. Everything else looked fine. Brownell's had the parts (H&R 1871 never did respond to my e-mail) in stock. Reassembly went OK once I figured out how the sear spring went in. If I did it right, the long side of the spring receives its tension against the inserted magazine. So I guess it's a "magazine disconnect" safety feature. The trigger spring, it turned out, was OK. Interestingly, it receives its tension from the slide assembly when reinstalled on the frame. So, it function tests OK and it will be up to the owner to test fire. Parts & Shipping $21.00. If anyone knows a different (correct) way for that sear spring to fit in there, let me know.

clean & more clean then check...also keep chamber clean as there are little holes that allow gas to expand against case & retard blowback 0 -
Most likely someone tried to home butcher the trigger and hammer to get less sear engagement...not good, as there are not many parts floating around for that.

I had a little trouble with one of my Automag IIs when I first got it. FTFs and the hold open didn't work.
First try an ultrasonic cleaning that many ranges have. This gets all the really tough places.
Then , if needed go a little further by taking off the grips (especially the right side). Be careful as these are not normal in the sense that the grips house mechanism.
Anyway, after the ultrasonic clean and a field strip and VERY light oiling, my AM II shoots just fine and is dead nuts reliable.

AMT Automag II as originally designed had a weak link, the sear was a small investment cast piece that is prone to breaking.
When Hi-Standard took over the Automag production, the sear was re-designed to make it bigger/more mass.
www.brownells.com has parts for the Automag II but note they are current production parts meaning the new modifyed Hi-Standard version. Sear # is 430-000-287.
If your gun is of the older style, I do not know if the new parts can be retro-fit, see your Gunsmith.
