Can anyone explain the ballistics of what affect the length of the barrel has on the muzzle velocity of a fired bullet? (i.e., would the same cartridge have a different muzzle velocity in a shorter barrel than it would in a longer barrel, and if so, why?) Thanks in advance, Joepoidog

    The Browning B92 will only feed standard length 44 Mag ammo.
    Keith type bullets wont feed without modification of feed guides.

    I can't speak for all but the 44 Mag and 357 Mag feed just fine in Marlins...never had any problems. As for ballistics, the 44 Mag is more capable, because it operates safely at higher pressures than the 45LC and throws a heavier larger diameter bullet than the 357 Mag. I have seen guys load the 45 LC hotter, but the 44 Mag will out perform the 45 LC.

    Ballistics with a lever rifle and the rounds you mention is going to be just a little bit better than with a pistol and probably more accurate.

    That said, those rounds hardly compare to ballistics of even the mild-mannered 30-30. Especially now that Hornady has the Lever-evolution ammo out that is made for this type rifle. The .308 Marlin Express has even more outstanding ballistics. Like equal to a .308 Win. almost.

    Personally, I understand having like bullets for rifle and pistol for the convenience. But, I have always liked the fact that with a rifle you have the ability to reach way out and hit something. With a pistol and the less energetic round it's pretty iffy. So, I load each to their full capability for the purposes intended.

    I have a Winchester 94 in .44 Mag. and a Rossi in .45 Colt--both with 20" barrels. They are a lot of fun to shoot. As far as ballistics; the following are a couple of loads fired across my chronograph screens:

    .45 Colt, 250 gr. Hornady XTP, 18 gr./Lil'Gun
    4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk = 1035 fps
    Rossi = 1312 fps

    .44 Mag., 255 Lyman #429244 cast, 22 gr./old 2400
    6 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk = 1318 fps
    Winchester 94 = 1692 fps

    As a bonus, these carbines fit very nicely in a saddle scabard on a horse, just like in the movies! Hope the above info is kinda what you're looking for.

    Actually because the cartridge is so inefficient in a short barrel, a .357 magnum can get a HUGE boost out of a rifle compared to from a pistol.

    A 158 grain .357 magnum will get you 1250 fps from a revolver.
    But it will get you 1800 fps (or more) from a carbine and in the rifle you might be able to safely push it a little hotter.

    Its nearly 50% more velocity, and because energy is proportionate the SQUARE of velocity, its double the energy, IIRC over 1000 foot-pounds at the muzzle.

    Now, that's not 30/30 territory but its still a pretty heavy wallop!

    The Marlin .38/.357 Model 94s have a bit of a reputation for feeding problems. My experience is that this reputation is well deserved with SWC and other blunt nosed bullets. However, if the bullet has a decent rounded orgive they feed just fine.

    Winchester had Miroku, who is their sister division Browning's manufacturer, make some 92's, and there were some chambered in the 357, 44 and 45. They are smoothe as silk thongs, and extremely accurate. You can expect to gain about 400 FPS by handloading in the rifle over the revolver. They all make a pretty good deer rifle out to 100 yards or so with a well placed shot.
