Python Nickel finish

I have a NIB Colt Python in the Nickel finish. It has never even been turned. I took it out of the safe yesterday and noticed some discoloration on the trigger guard that I have never noticed before. It is not rust but I do not know what it is. Is there anything I can use to take it off without damaging the finish? Maybe Flitz perhaps?

    Whatever you use ,I'd test it on something else first, to make sure it's not abrasive. Gun collectors don't like any cleaning marks..

    Try WD 40 or lighter fluid first.
    If that doesn't work, and it's discoloration of the nickel, Simichrome or Flitz used very lightly should work.

    Try a soft cotton cloth with Kroil, or a silicone gun cloth.

    I don't know if the problem is Python plating, or some other factor.

    I was shown a nickel plated Python that had been stored in a safe zipped in a gun rug, that had 90% of the finish discolored. Moisture in the air? Chemicals in the gun rug? Just don't know.

    The owner tried everything suggested above without improvement; he finally paid $400 to have it expertly replated.

    Gun rugs are BAD because the fleece lining absorbs moisture and holds it against the gun for prolonged periods of time.

    I don't know if that was what hurt this python, but it couldn't have helped.

    UPDATE: Thanks guys. The lighter fluid trick worked perfectly. I used that and a little elbow grease and it came right off. Sprayed the revolver with a little G96 and put her back in the original box and happily placed it back in the safe. Thanks for your timely answers one and all AND a special thanks to Bill.

    For many years, Colt shipped their handguns in a plastic bag with a piece of VPI paper. It's a good idea to replace the VPI paper every once in a while, especially if you ever open the bag, to prevent corrosion.
