    I can't speak to his reasoning but I can hazard a guess.

    If he has turned down lining Trapdoors, there's a good reason such as the metal of the barrel doesn't ream correctly or more likely, the danger of damaging the original rifle and being sued by the owner. This potential alone would make working on Trapdoors unacceptable. Another thought is that the reaming necessary to fitting a liner correctly might not leave enough of the original barrel to be safe. I don't have one to measure so I can only guess.

    You might take a little time and using a good search engine, look for any others that might take this task on. I'll bet that if Redman won't do it, no one with any experience will either but it doesn't hurt to check.

    If you bored the Trap Door barrel the material that is left is to thin to support the liner under pressure. I would replace the barrel, I see a barreled reciever or barrel on some of the popular auction sites at real good prices. Part it out!

    Barrel lining is pretty much limited to rimfire or pistol cartridges(32/20. 25/20 etc) A 45/70 is too much pressure for a liner .

    I found two people on line who relined 45-70 rifles one in Oregon the other in the Southern US and called both to get some pricing on doing a trapdoor I was working on and they stated that the Trapdoor did not have enough material in the barrel to hold the linner. They also relined some of the old low pressure center fire and smooth bore black powder rifles in other large calibers.

    Unless .45-70 is a necessity, why not reline to a smaller caliber? Anything violates originality. A smaller caliber bypasses the wall thickness issue and could make a great shooter. Rework of the extractor not a big deal.

    I can't remember his name, but there is a guy in Penn. who specializes in relining the larger bores. I know he does muskets and he is very reasonable. part of the problem is that either the barrel or the liner is going to be very thin toward the muzzle. Best to use someone who is setup for this. Someone out there must know this guys name.

    Believe SP45 is thinking of Bob Boyd at the Freischutz Shop. Internet chatter speaks very highly of his work. I have a 50-70 Sharps carbine in the shop now for a new barrel liner and Bob says it will look just like it did when it came out of the Springfield re-works. Do not know if he can fix your 45-70 but his number is 717-642-6696.
