S&W Model 1917, "S" serial number.

I have the above model. Its in great condition. Listed in the Blue Book as approx 991 manufactured. It says 1917 Army commercial, mfg. May 14, 1946-July 25,1947.

Denoted by safety hammer block and serial no. "S" prefix. Serial number is S2107XX. Has lanyard ring mounted on butt with checkered grips.

I plan to list this shortly, but have no idea of value - could anyone help or point me in the right direction.

    The right direction would be towards a camera store. Without seeing pictures of it, we have no idea of the value, & neither would prospective buyers.

    Sounds like you've got one of the post-WWII 1917 commercial versions made up of parts left over from wartime manufacturing. These, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson are relatively rare with less than a thousand made between serial numbers S209792 and S210782. I've got one in the last ten serial number range and yours is close to that; probably made in 1949/1950. Unfortunately mine has been nickled which substantially reduces the value but is still interesting since there are so few of this commercial variation. Pictures to assess condition would be helpful but if yours is in original condition and in the 90+% range you're looking at a fairly valuable piece. Maybe in the $1500 to $2500 range or higher if towards 98%. For comparison, I paid $300 or so for my refinished nickel plated gun.

    Here's a thought: why don't you take the photos that you will have to use to auction the item and post them here prior to putting it up for auction?

    It will allow us to more closely nail down the value. Again, just a thought. Best, Joe
