Makarovs pistol

I am looking to buy a Makarov pistol as a conceal carry weapon, but don't know a lot about them except they are dependable and I like their features...DA/SA/de-cocker. I want one about the size of a Walther PPK/S or PP. Can I get a suggestion about the best model/yr or whatever with one of these. Thanks

    There out of production now, and going up in price. All the Makarov's whether made in Russia, China, East Germany or Bulgaria, are pretty much the same. Expect to pay at least $250 for a used one in descent condition. Most commonly found would likely be either the Russian commercial production from the 90's, (adjustable rear sight model), or Bulgarian ex-military Makarov's. The Bulgarian military would probably be better quality.

    The adjustable sight is great for target shooting or when stored in a large holster, trying to pull it out with out snaging the rear sight might be a problem. I have seen a commerical model that had the contour sights on them, this might be the right model to go for. I would also try to find a 9x18 in lieu of the .380 model.

    I have a Bulgarian one that I have had for a couple of years. It makes a nice carry gun and for the price it can not be beat. I kinda compare it as the SKS of pistols. It is not the best but it is the best at that price.

    The FEG PA63, while not a makarov is a copy of the Walther PP. The grip i slightly different and it has an alloy frame so its lighter. It does chamber the 9mm makarov round and can be had dirt cheap right now. I had one for awhile and it ate everything.

    I do recommend swapping in a new Wolff Recoil spring though. One for a regular Makarov will work.

    I have them all..Chinese, Russian EGerman, FEG...on and on, but the two I prefer for CC are the Polish P64 and the FEG R61. Both are almost clones of the PPk and each has its advantages. The R61 is lighter, sights are a bit better but the alloy means that it can't really take a beating. Recoil is sharp and it chews up firing pins. In my view the Radom P-64 (Factory 11)is the best made of the Maks and the only one that cannot take any other country's Mak parts. It is heavy compared to the others and recoil is much less. Both are a tiny bit larger in my hand than my Walther's but pack a bigger punch than the .32. They are fun to shoot and easy to carry. P 64's are still available in Shotgun News as several of my friends just purchased theirs, imported by PW Arms in Redford, WA. Good shooting!

    If you replace the recoil spring on the Feg, it wont beat itself to death. Mine chewed through a couple thousand rounds easily.

    I have Hungrian FEG PA-63. DA Trigger is aweful, recoil is sharp to painful, but overall for a $125 gun you can't beat it.

    They won't be cheap forever.

    I forget the model # but I would check out one of those double stack magazine 9x18's that Aim Surplus waas selling.

    Only issue I have with 9x18 mak is the ammo is more expensive than regular 9mm. For a small ultra compact CCW gun. I would check out a Khar CW9.

    I agree P-64 is a good model. A bit smaller and only a 6 round mag. But is accurate and packs a punch for a small pistol. But the DA trigger pull is a b!tch.

    If cheap is important, then the Makarov M is OK, but they have tiny, useless sights, they are heavy and there are many lighter, better pistols available, IMHO. I view the Makarov more as a fun range gun than a serious CCW.

    The 'double stack 9x18mm' refered to may be the CZ-82.
    It is a bit larger for CCW, but has some advantages.

    All the 'controls' are in the same place as a 1911 style handgun,
    it still has the SA/DA operation and drop hammer safety,
    and 12 rounds vs 7.

    I believe they were a whopping $ 200.
    Is that what you were thinking about ?
