Rebarrel Rem. 700

Sorry if this has been asked 100 times already...

I have a Rem. 700 bdl, long action, .30-06. Can I re-barrel this to shoot .243 & if so, what's involved other than replacing the barrel? Also, what brand of barrel would the experts recommend for a semi-serious 200-300 yd target shooter...who is currently feeling the crunch of this economy?

    Yes, you can convert the M700 LA to use the .243" bullets but you neglect to tell us which cartridge you are asking about. There are LA 6mm cartridges but there are many more 6mm SA cartridges. If you're asking about the .243 Winchester then it's a SA cartridge.

    You can either replace and fit a SA magazine box to the LA bottom metal or you can use a block at the rear of the LA magazine then switch out and modify the SA follower/spring. This is not work for the amateur cobble to take on.

    In your situation, I think you could find a good, accurate .243 Winchester SA rifle for less money and effort. Also don't forget to reserve some money for a quality scope. Good barrels require good glass.

    I don't know what that means in terms of money. If you want value, buy a good barrel from a top manufacturer then pay a good gunsmith to install it correctly. If you don't have the money, buy what you can afford and take your chances. You are not going to find a diamond in the rough from a cheap manufacturer no matter what some folks will tell you.

    Who isn't? We're all in the same boat with this economy, it's all relative. Here is a list of barrel makers. They all have websites with price lists. Just be aware that most of the good ones are a tad behind because of demand these days. Bruno's in Phoenix usually has a supply of barrels as does Midway and Brownells.

    Thanks for the speedy reply, nononsense! I figured it would probably be better to just start with a SA, but thought I'd ask. I have a K-15 in .243 Win that I love shooting & I'm a big fan of that cartridge... I just don't want to wear that one out. I got the m700 as a gift, so I figured if I could rebarrel it for a couple hundred & shoot the heck out of it, I'd be happy. Semi-serious just means I don't compete, but I'm very competitive with my buddies & want a good shooter...like sub-moa, or close. I think the Savage 10 ???? is supposed to be a decent gun for the money & maybe a 1moa shooter out of the box.
