Bert H ! Help with Winchester 94

I am more a military rifle guy so when my friend came to me about this I knew just who to ask. We are looking for value, what particular sub model this is, and if not all original, what is not.

Here is what we know

Here is all the info he has been able to come up with.

It has a Nickel steel barrel. Smokeless powder, 32WS round.
Was manufactured around 1906.

    I just want to say......Thats one nice old piece of American History, and in very nice condition to beat. I love the short button Magazine. Can you take a close up of that rear site ?

    My friend took the pics. He would have to take some more.

    It looks like an old "roller coaster" type German site though.

    The rear sight appears to be the special sight that was made for Model 94 rifles that were chambered for high velocity smokeless powder loads. It has been my experience that you will find it only on some Winchester Model 94 rifles that are chambered in 32 Winchester Special. However, with Winchester you should never say never and it might have appeared on Model 94's chambered for other smokeless cartridges, but I personally haven't examined one.

    It will probably be marked on the left side of the sight:

    SMOKELESS
    .32 W.S. M'94

    It is a special order Sporting Rifle Model 1894, but unfortunately, somebody refinished it sometime in its past. It has been reblued and the stocks refinished.

    The 1/2 octagon barrel, and the button magazine are both special order options. The rear sight was commonly found on many of the early 32 Winchester Special chambered rifles.

    Thanks Burt, the gun did not look like the Rust Bluing it should have and I mentioned that to my friend. I figured better to ask the Winchester expert than shoot him some false info.

    Any idea on value? I told him most likely 50-60% reduction in value/ But from what value is what he wants to know. It sounds like he got it dirt cheap so he wants it as a shooter.

    $500 - $600 is what it is worth, but there are many people who would be asking twice that much for it.

    Thanks.......and there are always people out there that try to sell silver at gold prices.

    Simple... the lever, hammer, butt plate, and forend nosecap on a Model 1894 of that vintage were originally case color finished versus blued. Additionally, the Winchester Definitive Proof mark stamps were applied after the barrel and receiver were blued. Most regular "joe" gunsmiths do not know any better, and they polish and reblue all of the parts.
