Can I give a rifle away?

I have a 22 that I've owned for some time that I would like to give to a pal in Iowa. I will be going through Iowa on my way to NE this summer. Can I just take it with me and hand it to her or do I need to ship it to a FFL?

    Long gun FTF should be OK if the receipiant can leagally own it and it's a Long gun...Ya can't ship it across a state line without an FFL...

    GB is right, you legally need an FFL if it is an out of state transfer. Has nothing to do with shipping. So to follow the letter of the law you could take it with you then stop by his local FFL and have it transfered.

    You can give the long gun to an Iowa resident ftf. No ffl is needed.

    Across state lines you LEGALLY need an FFL even if a give away. The fact that it is face to face means nothing

    Since you are going to visit...

    Go to UPS..ship it to her address, with your name on the shipment, and hers as "C/O Jane Smith". It's legal to ship it to yourself across state lines. You arrive, open the box, then.....

    Give it to her.

    Get a kiss.

    What Joe said, or take it to her place just to show it to her and forget it when you leave. Still "your" rifle.

    Jeff asked a direct question; he wants to know the legal way to do this. He deserves a direct (& accurate) answer.

    Federal law permits a nonlicensee to transfer a firearm to a resident of his own state (state & local law permitting), or to a licensee in any state. Period.

    OK..maybe I'm missing something. Shipping it to yourself gets the firearm legally to point "B" (across state lines).

    Where does the problem arise, then? When you give it away after it has arrived? I know "intent", but that's a tough one to prove, unless this forum can be used to establish intent. What say ye?
