Taurus Thunderbolt 45 Colt

These have been out for a while now does anyone have any first hand experience with one? I'm looking for info on jams, problems etc..did a search here but not much posted about them.

    I had one but got rid of it because of jams and feed problems. As a gunsmith for Gander I did work on some, got them running but were way to finicky to be 100%.

    I have had two so far. The first one had a very oversized and out-of-round chamber. The cartridge wouldn't seal to the chamber when fired, and gas was blasted back into my face when fired. The fired cases came out with an oval shape instead of round. That one went back to Taurus for repairs, and was replaced with a new one. This new one still has a somewhat generous chamber, but within limits I suppose. If I use a stiff-enough load, the case obturates to the chamber and no gas back, and the fired cases are round. I have had no feed difficulties at all so far, using either factoory or 250 gr lead flat-nosed cast bullets. However, the "cowboy" style load with Trailboss powder that is comfortable to shoot in my Colt Single Action Army will not seal the case to the chamber, nor will factory loads. It takes a slightly stiffer, higher-pressure load to seal the case. And, I must have the sights way right in the rear and way left in the front to shoot to point of aim, no matter the load. I wondered if the barrel would be bent, though I can't see anything with my eyes. I am overall disappointed.

    they are reversed engineered so they have the same probs as the originals

    I had jamming on mine, and had to pull the feed tube at the range to unload it. The feed tube was crimped at the receiver end, and so I corrected the problem at the range. No more jamming..but do you want to walk that path? Up to you.

    Yes, chamber is large, but no blow-by with factory (non cowboy) loadings. Case life may suffer if you reload, though. Keep the chamber pressure up, and you should be OK.

    Don't get a used one. They got rid of it due to the problems encountered, and a new one should have the earlier problems lessened. Best, Joe

    Ref. large chambers..get a Taurus Thunderbolt with a SerNo "ZD" or later. Earlier ones had the grossly large chambers w/blow-by.

    One other item..it's an inherently dangerous gun. Either fire it 'till it's empty, or cycle the action. No prob, you say? Well, you have to lower the hammer onto a live round in order to release the bolt lock, so you can cycle the action and eject the unfired cartridge. When slowly lowering the hammer, the firing pin reached its forward limit of travel on a live primer before the bolt would unlock. Not good. Best again, Joe
