Fish Scale Checkering?

At one point (long, long ago) I thought about becoming a gunsmith for a bit, but I decides that I didn't want to ruin my "fun" by turning it into work. I always like the unusual and one time I saw a pic of "fish scale" checkering in a photo, I thought it looked pretty nice. So I thought about how a person could do this, after afew practice runs I finally came up with a procedure. I tried it out on a sportized Arisaka my brother did of a weapon my Dad drug out of a cave in the Philippines during WWII (now I wish he didn't touch it, but that's another story). I had told a number of friends I have meant on the internet about it, and I have finally taken some pic.s to share with them. So I wanted to share them with you guys here. What do you think? ...Mark

    I like it, but then I don't own it. May be unpleasant on the hands to shoot and handle, Looks much better than some of the so called checkering jobs I've done. Thanks for sharing.-Mike

    NO no power tools, biggest problem was getting a half-round punch. I ended up making my own out of a roll pin. It feels fine ...too me at least, but it does have a "positive grip" feel. Probably the good part is it's not in one point, but spread out in your palm. IMHO

    PS ...I had it rebarrelled to a .358 Win. so recoil is fair. This was my "bear gun" up in Alaska.[:D]

    I think it looks awesome.

    VERY nice work.

    My "concern" is on durability. The sharp ends of the scales look like they could be relatively easily blunted and/or pick up dirt.

    beantownshootah ...This rifle is about 10 years old (with my fish scaling on it) ...how hard the wood is has alot to do with it. I had done another rifle I had with a AAA french walnut stock. The wood on it was very dense so I was able to go with a smaller scale ...looked better to me anyway.

    Looks great and, IMHO, the fish scale is particularly appropriate for a custom Japanese Ariska. Not to mention 358win being a great choice for a cartridge. I hope whoever inherits it, a long time from now, appreciates it for it's combined family history.

    Don't sell yourself short , that Joe fella does some nice work , but the job you did on the Ariska is mighty nice looking also .
    Wish I had the talent to do work like that .

    I could not see your work on the other computer I was using, but it is way beyond anything I could do, and I like it better than the cummings work.
