Husqvarna 456 questions

I have a Husqvarna model 456 that I am cleaning up. I want to install a new trigger in it. Timney makes several triggers for Mauser-type actions. Should I get the featherweight deluxe with side safety? Mine stock trigger has the side safety. Button nearly flush with stock. Or can I used the existing safety with a new trigger?

Would my rifle be considered a small ring action or large? It is a 30-06. Am thinking of reaming to 30-06 ackley. I own one in an Encore set up. Please advise.

    I'm not aquainted with the 456 but I doubt the safty would work with a different trigger, as to rechambering to .30/06 a.i. it's possible but you will have to set the barrel back about 1/4 turn to get proper heaspace.

    The model 456 is a Mauser action with a plain shroud on it and a side safety. If you get a Timney trigger it should just pin right in like most other Timney triggers made for Mausers. You will need to get the kind with the side safety as there is no standard safety on the bolt anymore. Chances are 99% that it will fit alongside the shroud just like it was intended. If it doesn't fit the safety arm may need to be modified outward so that it will fit. If this is the case the stock will need to be cut out so the arm will move freely as well.

    Thanks for the note! I called Timney yesterday. Their tech gal told me they are going to manufacture a trigger specifically for the Husqy rifle with the side safety. They've got two Model 456s to work from. Trigger should be ready for sale in 6 weeks. Otherwise the Featherweight Deluxe with the safety would work, with a bit of modification as you suggested.quote:Originally posted by sandwarrior

    I am a Husqvarna collector and I would advise you to wait for the new Timney trigger. Any modifications to the stock to fit the current Timney with the safety lever will lower the value of your rifle.

    sbhva has a good point in that removing material takes away from the value of the rifle. You need to consider how good of condition it's in and how to keep it that way if it's good enough grade to be collectable. I can certainly say that while I've seen a lot of Husqvarna rifles out there for amazingly little for the quality you get, there will be an end to them. Prices will rise as supply runs out. Being a quality product it's only a matter of time that they will continue to increase.

    Something you may consider is to put it into a 'drop-in' stock for the duration you use it and save the original. You can cut the 'drop-in' as you want and not hurt any value. Keep the original stock and trigger in a safe place and re-install them if you want to sell the rifle. Shoot it sensibly, clean it and keep it oiled and it won't lose much if any value.
