6.8mm vs 5.56 ammo/rifle

Greetings, I'm looking for some feedback positive and negative on the purchase of a factory new (STAG) 6.8mm SPC carbine. Info would indicate that the ballistics etc. of this round are superior in many regards compared to 5.56 or 7.62. As of now I realize the ammo is not as easy to find as the others but there is some out there. Is there any merit to the rumor of increased use by the military and consequently the mainstream ? I would like to make an educated decision and rely on insight from this group. If it truly is that much better why don't we hear more about it, what's the story folks ? Is there a preferred supplier for ammo ? Thanks.

    love my 6.8,its an older cmmg,the newest versions are going with the 1/11 twist which is supposed to be superior.stag makes good stuff,try silver state for ammo,also made by hornady,s&b,rem,and barrett.although its doubtful the military will retool for a different caliber in the middle of a war,enough people and manufacturers have invested r&d into the 6.8 that it should be around for a while.try 68forums for a dedicated site,and dont forget to stock up on mags.

    Well you will get better ballistics from the 6.8 over the 5.56... The trade offs you make for those ballistics is everything is harder to find and more expensive for the 6.8 carbine.. like mags, ammo, upper internals, ect. The 6.8 gives you about 400-450 yards of "flat" trajectory in a 16" carbine where as with the 5.56 and 69 grain heavies you have 300-350yards with the same barrel length. Agian the "Flat" trajectory (-less then 2'bullet drop from center of bore) range of the 7.62x51 is about the same as 5.56.. But still a 7.62 175 grain bullet is gonna have and do more knockdown and internal damage to the live target at 500-1000yards.
