Marlin 93 - Is this an Antique ?

i bought this marlin 93 today - and i was wondering if anybody can tell me about what year it was made, and if the number shown is the serial number?

i bought it as an "antique" and am hoping to sell it as one too

    I'll need to check another book for the serial # dates, but I see that the early guns had "model 1893" and later guns just had "model 93" on the tang.

    Hello badge9781 - You may consider this an "antique", but the BATFE won't. The star on the tang is an inspector's mark from the 1924-1928 period. The "Corporation" roll stamp means the barrel was made a little earlier (1922-24), and got used up when production resumed under new ownership. It's a nice looking carbine that cost about $32 when it was new. GoodLuck - RounderRick

    Eligible for a C&R license holder but not an "antique" which requires it to be manufactured prior to Jan. 1, 1899. Early models were stamped like the picture below:

    Looks like the numbers you show are stamped on the lower tang of the receiver, serial numbers are stamped on the bottom of the receiver.

    The star on the tang means that it was picked out as an exceptional rifle in fit and finish, not an inspection mark. Nice rifle, I have a Model 39 with a star on the tang.

    Early Marlin lever actions had the serial number on the lower tang. But that number does not look right. It appears to be raised and any Marlin lever action serial numbers I have seen have had the numbers stamped. [?][?]

    they are stamped - not raised - just a bad pic is all

    remove the butt stock, at least some '93's had the ser. # stamped on the side of the upper tang. it is possible the lower tang was replaced.

    The serial number is stamped the same way on the Model 39 I have that was manufactured in 1922, It is stamped on the bottom tang. The numbers on the 39 are stamped uneven and run at an angle up the tang, the numbers are spaced unevenley as if the numbers were stamped by hand. The way the six stamped loops back inside the number and the way the one jets out at top and bottom are exactley the same on the rifle I have. I think your sereial number is right were it belongs and the number look just like they should. I think your rifle was manufactured at the same years that the one I have, there are no records for these rifles between aproxamitley 1922-1938, Marlin started stamping a letter prefix on their rifles after these rifle were built.

    Almost every Marlin produced after 1926 until WW2 had the inspectors "star". Marlin used it as a marketing gimmick.

    I had a "B" (1940) prefix 39A that had the star on the inside of the receiver. I had a Model 37 with the "star" on the side of the top tang.

    thanks emmett! i think you are pretty close on your estimate from all the info ive been able to gather

    we took it out and shot it today. fires like a champ!
