Winchester Model 70, 30-06 1938?
I am going to sell my grandpa's Winchester model 70 30-06. I feel I need to do a little bit of research before I put it up for auction, first off because I don't know a lot about guns and second: When I brought this gun into my local gunshop, a small croud gathered around me and several people wanted to buy it on the spot. From the Info I could gather there by various onlookers, This gun is unique for several reasons.
1. It has a very low serial number (just above 200)
2 It is in very good condition, used very little: Grandpa was too busy and dad never fired it.
3. It is all original except for the scope (Alaskan, correct for the period).
The scope is very unique by itself. Looking through it is an amazing experience, it is very very bright, crisp, clean and clear. it still has the original leather caps. you can see by the pics that some of the finish has rubbed of the scope. It appears to be alumimium with an anodized coating, is there anything to be done to darken that?
will get some detail photos taken of it and post them as soon as I can. I just need to know what buyers look for in a gun of this type, and am trying to arrive at a starting price and a Buy it now price for It's upcoming auction.

This will be my second try at posting because I did not yet have pics taken for the first. These pics have been lighted to show all details and defects to their fullest, surprisingly in real life the gun looks better than most of the photos. Thank you to all who have emailed with offers to buy. I will probably be putting it up for auction here within the next couple of weeks.

Excellent pictures! Beautiful rifle! Probably left New Haven about the same time as my old M. 70, number 875!
I sold mine almost 40 years ago and still regret the fact, even though mine was not, as yours appears to be, all original!
If neither you, nor anyone in your family, have ANY interest, then you're sure to pull strong $$, but as others have said, if you can, I'd wait. You can always decide to sell it down the road, and I promise you that between now and then it will increase in value more than most, if not all, of anything else you own of value. Keep it as an investment and if one day you decide that it has value for you beyond the $$$ , so much the better!!

Flash: givette here. You mentioned "what should be done to correct"...
Don't Do Anything!! All that should be done is a wipe-down with a gun-cloth.
Trust me on this..all your attempts to "pretty up", will
knock dollars off the gun.

Do NOT touch the scope or the rifle in any way. Leave it as it is. Do not attempt cosemetic repairs; you will destroy the collectors value if you do. 0 -
nice rifle, as the other have said there isn't anything you can do to the finish to inprove it. you could try to find an original rear sight but thats about it. as to the auction, list it at $1000 with no reserve and NO b.i.n. for 2 weeks ending on a sun. night. 0 -
I will be bidding should you decide to sell here on GB. It should fetch upwards of 2k. If it were mine I would list it at a penny and let it run for 2 weeks. No need to start it at 1k, as it will get there quickly with no problem and the more bids on it, the more attractive it looks to buyers. Best of luck. 0 -
i can't see the pictures the rear receiver bridge should not be tapped for a scope ? 0 -
MIKE WISKY offers good advice. Do not put a reserve on it, or Buy Now! Show case it, Bold letter, and Highlite it. Also put a view counter on it...drives bidders wild to know others are looking. Sit back, grab a cold one, and watch world war II of bidding break out! 0 -
