Ruger P85 and old Mausers

My father in law recently passed away and we are in the process of evaluating his gun collection. We found a Ruger P85 in a holster and I was wondering if they came in a box or case when purchased. I do not want to waste time worrying about a plastic box if there was never one in the first place. I also need a reference for identifying his large collection of surplus Mauser rifles. Is there some gun digest type of paperback that has all the variations. Thanks in advance Scott

    The Ruger would have had a box.

    My P-85 came with two magazines and in a plastic case. The case has a little brass padlock that has a Ruger logo on it.

    A Ruger P85 originally would have come in a black plastic box, not gray like the current boxes, with a single close tab on the front instead of two tabs.
    The earlier ones are just marked P85. If returned to the factory for the safety mod, they would be stamped on the safety lever "MKII". Later P85's were marked on the slide "P85 Mark II"

    The early P-85s came in a cardboard yellow and black box. The safety lever is stamped MK11R.

    As a side note the pistol after the safety mod. they then do not strip down in the same manner. Mine is an early 1987 manufacture. YMMV.

    Many thanks for the Ruger info, now we will know what to look for. Any ideas on the mauser references? SCOTT

    Re: The Mauser Rifles. "Mauser Military Rifles of the World" by Robert Ball, is the basic reference text for collectors. It's up to the 4th edition now. Chances are you can pick up a prior edition used on either Amazon or Bookfinders. If you believe the Mausers to be valuable, it might be worth your while to purchase the latest edition from Amazon.

    Mind you, Ball's book is excellant but it doesn't help with pricing.

    An older book, if you can find it, is also good; Ludwig Olsen's "Mauser Bolt Action Rifles."
