could a silencer work on a revolver??

    is a silencer caliber specific? can i shoot a .223 thru a 9mm can and get the same sound reduction as a dedicated .223 can?

    a quality unit used with subsonic rounds can be very silent,,most on large weapons are used as a noise reducer...and those used on revolvers are movie magic

    As far as the quietness is concerned, it all depends on what your shooting wether it is supersonic(above the speed of sound@1100 FPS) or subsonic(below the speed of sound) and where you are standing. If you are behind the muzzle, a gun equipped with the proper suppressor all you will hear is the hammer drop, and maybe an airgun 'poof' sound. If you are in off to the side, but in front of the muzzle, you will hear a supersonic crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier if the bullet is traveling above the sound of speed.

    I have shot a select fire 10/22 that was suppressed, and all you could hear was the hammer falling and the action working.

    So yes...they do work as advertised.

    In 1930s I made one that was so silent that with a .22 short you would hear the hammer fall click. For the outside tube I used a part of the pump of a scrap Benji air rifle, the baffles were of one mill aluminum tax tokens about quarter inch apart, ends turned of brass on a friend's 1860 lathe, held on muzzle by friction to my dad's Win 61.

    hello. yes, silencers are that quiet. ive got quite a few and they are quiet. ive even got one on my 50 bmg rifle. no need for hearing protection when shooting it. it is incredible! ive got them for my 308 and 223, 9mm, .22 and 45 acp also. well worth the money.

    To use an analogy, my supressed 10/22 makes a muzzle noise that approximates an air rifle when using sub-sonic rounds. The bolt slap is more noticable than the report.

    From what I have seen & heard, it is as has been said: you hear the sounds of machinery in operation, as long as you use sub-sonic rounds. "Click-chink; click-chink; click-chink" about covers it.[;)]

    The others have nailed it.

    Anytime you have supersonic ammo you will have noise. You will get the crack of the round but it will be displaced down range. With subsonic it will be much quieter. It will also make a difference in what platform you are using.

    If you want to get an idea of what they sound like get on Youtube there are tons of videos of suppressors being shot.

    Modern suppressors have an indefinite life.
