1911 &A1 Experts I need some help please.

Trying to figure out if this has had the serial number removed or is a lunchbucket gun. Slide is definatly a Colt slide with a P proof mark on the top. Barrel is stamped S. Frame is the question. No US Property markings nor normal serial number. Yet it is proofed and has inspection marks. Check out the pics and give me some opinions please before I buy it or not. Thanks.

    Clawson covers these in his original Colt Service Automatic book. It appears to be a recovered weapon that had the original serial ground off. The "X" number was applied at some point after recovery.
    It can be determined which manufacture actually made it with a little research using Clawson's book.

    Grind marks are obvious at the SN and USP locations. I don't know where the X 1931 came from but I would want to know before I bought the gun.

    IMHO While it MAY be legal to own It sure as heck will never be more then a shooter and again IMHO not worth over $400.00

    EDIT the us did X out some serial numbers on civilian models that were transferred to government stocks However the font and the size is Different then yours

    I looked up the pertinent information if you want it, but should you decide not to buy the pistol, I will since I know what it is.

    p3skyking, I would appreciate any info you may have on the 45. I'm basically attempting to determine if it is a legal gun so I can buy it. Problem is I don't have any speciality books on the Gvt model. If you prefer email me the info at wilmot@pioneercable.net Thanks in advance.

    Well, you don't really need the books if you can get the information. Let others worry about proving it's not legal.

    In this case, the information may be found in Appendix F of Clawsons COLT 45 SERVICE PISTOLS. MODELS OF 1911 AND 1911A1.

    As first proposed in 1924, arsenals were to keep weapons that the serial numbers had been rendered unreadable by FIELD SERVICE BULLETIN #4. The weapons were sent to Springfield Arsenal and later, Augusta Arsenal for refurbishing and a new serial number. X1181 through X4385 are part of the first series that ran from 1925 to 1953.

    There is much more, but this is what's important to you. Clawson's book is the true bible of military Colt 45 automatics. The book only cost me $50 when first printed in 1993, but I understand they are a bit more now since Clawson didn't allow a reprinting.

    Thanks for the info p3skyking. Now that I'm beginning to see more Gvt models again I'll have to pick up one of Clawsons books.
