Ruger M77 hawkeye

I am looking a buying a new rifle. The local gun shop has a couple of these in the caliber that i want .243. Does anyone have experience with this rifle? Ruger's are usually good shooting a tough rifles. Any opinions would be appreciated.

    Also, any opinions on the matte stainless finish on the barrel. Its different from anything I've owned before.

    I don't like it at all. I managed to just buy a Ruger 77 International & get it in Mk II configuration - polished bolt and high polish bluing. If a Hawkeye finished International had shown up I would have sent it back.

    I didn't get so lucky with the 77V in 308. I have two older models (77V) in in their "Grey Ghost" type finish and the nice polish is evident under the dark grey finish. The new "stainless" finish on my new 308 is grainy and too light. I think it looks like crap, to be blunt. But it is a target rifle, so my want is that it shoots well and I'm not overly concerned with appearance.

    I think Ruger downgrading the exterior finish of their rifles - rifles known as having classic good looks - is a mistake, I intend to buy more CZs.

    Well, that's what makes horse races; difference of opinion, so here goes.
    I've owned about a dozen Ruger rifles; No. 1's, tang safety 77's, Mk. II as well as a couple of 77-22's, numberous 10-22's and I have no idea how many handguns.
    IMHO the new Hawkeye is their finest rifle to date; mine is a .257 and there's just a lot of little things i really like. The new stock contour, recoil pad, finally decent (really nice) bottom metal, slick action and the improved trigger. I do like the high polish and gloss blue on my old .270, but matte finish on the .257 is perfect for my idea of the ideal hunting rifle and matches beautifully with the matte finish on the VX-III 2X7 scope I put on it.

    I have the last good 243 that Ruger made. It is a MKII Stainless with the skeleton stock. It was one that was made before they flushed their quality control, and customer service down the drain.

    Personally, for the money, you might want to look to the Tikka T-3 for the kind of money you would spend on a Hawkeye, and get yourself something truly amazing.

    My experience has been that both highly polished blued barrels and matte finished stainless barrels reflect sunlight like mirrors. I did not expect that of the matte barrel, but my hunting partners had no trouble seeing the flashes from a half mile out. I don't believe the javelina or deer did either, none came home with me.

    I'm a blued steel and walnut guy. But I've got a Hawkeye in matte blue and walnut and I can live with it. I actually like the feel of the stock and the checkering better than the older tang-safety guns or the MkII's. Mine is a .204 and it shoots very well so that makes it easier to own, too. But, since your shop has them, you can check the appearance and the feel of the rifle. If you like it (or you don't) it shouldn't matter what I think!
