  *- is Improved Modified
  ** is Modified
  **- is Improved Cylinder
  **$ is Skeet
  *** is Cylinder
  
  I wonder if the S markings might not indicate the chokes have been reamed from Mod and IC to Skeet by a gunsmith.

  I believe hawk carse is correct.I had a similar case where the chokes were changed by Simmons (Olathe KS) and marked the same way. Original chokes in the gun pictured were Improved Cylinder.
