  I probably should clarify, I would like to buy a book that shows the year of manufacture as well as what the different dash marks mean. Can you recommend a good book on Smiths?

  for author, enter "Jim Supica & Richard Nahas"
  
  for title, enter "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson"
  
  You will find copies used for about $25 up to new for about twice that.
  
  Check to make sure the book you order is the '3rd edition', it is the latest one out.
