remington model 514 no serial number visable?

me again...am rummaging thru old guns...rem model 514 single shot, bolt action .22 short, long, or lr. can't find serial #. i know it's old...was wife's step-dad's from when he was a boy... and he's 70+. some pitting and discoloration on bolt slide and on barrel.on barrel is a "square" followed by "PTT", then a square with a diagonal line from corner to corner within.
any info for me on this?

  thanks! this helped a lot. this gun is very accurate and fun to shooot. Any idea how to get a "breakdown" manual for this rifle? i can't really get to many areas to clean properly.
