FFL or no FFL What do you think?

I am a non FFL holder. I hold a C&R
This is an e-mail I received. Would you ship?

My dealer will accept a rifle from a non ffl if sent with a copy of your
drivers license. He will not send a copy of his license to a non FFl. He
gives me his license number which can be verified on the ATF website and
that would be the address to ship the rifle to. Let me know if this is ok.

    If you're a non-FFL, you don't need a copy. Just get his license number and confirm it along with his name & address through EZ-check.

    I have on occasion had the shipper ask to see the receiver's FFL, but that would be the only concern. Why he won't send you a copy is beyond me.

    Thanks to both of you. I too don't get why he just wouldn't send it. What could I possibly do with it? Have guns shipped to him?

    Some dealers are afraid people will use their FFL to sell guns. I believe that happened to Locust Fork.

    My smalltown (idiot) postmaster won't let me ship a gun unless I show him a copy of the receiving dealer's FFL. He also tried to tell me I must ship by Registered Mail but I pointed out the error of his ways.

    Well. if you hold a C&R, you ARE a FFL holder- it is an 03 C&R FFL. However, paranoia seems to run rampant with some folks. The FEDERAL requirement is that you must ship TO a FFL. If you have his FFL number, use the Federal EZCheck system, verify that the name and address is that of a current 01 FFL, and ship only to that name and address. Enter it in your bound volume under dispositions, and you should be good. Re: postmaster, see comment I made on paranoia. Thee is no requirement to furnish Postmaster with a copy of the FFL, only that you comply with Fed law on interstate shipment of firearms. Hoever, THEIR Domestic mail Manual clearly states that Postal Employees may NOT offer legal opinions on the mailing of firearms I would print that, and hand it to them. I am very fortunate in that I deal with 2 small rural post offices, and the staff know what their own regs are.

    Good advice from the fellas on the use of FFL EZ-Check.

    As for your supplying a copy of your C&R & DL, I always OFFER to do exactly that when I sell a gun. When I duplicate copies of my C&R, I put my DL on the bottom half so that EVERYONE who gets my C&R also gets that. You have to put yourself in the position of the receiving dealer; he must enter the transferor's information in his bound book, & he needs to be sure that information is accurate or he could have problems with the fellas with the bulges in the cheap suits.

    I do not have an FFL. The FFL, who handles my purchases, writes the name, serial number of the gun and the word "COPY" on the face of the FFL copy.
    He is an attorney and has no problem doing it this way.

    You contradicted yourself in the two sentences above. If you have a C&R, you are a FFL Type 03 holder.

    You did not mention the type and vintage firearm you are intending to ship, but if it is C&R eligible, send a copy of your Type 03 FFL to the buyers FFL, and get a copy of his FFL.

    Yes. Ship the [long] gun. Fella (or gal?) at the other end found a Gem of a dealer. Not many are willing to do this.

    Get the FFL number. All you will be needing is the first, second, and last number grouping for the E-Z check. Ship to the address listed on the ATF E-Z check website. Voila! Done deal! Best, Joe

    It is not a C&R eligible gun.
