bert h. need help. 38-55 replacement barrel.

bert, how can i tell if a barrel has been replaced. gun is a 1894 rifle 38-55 serial number 223xxx, it has the wp proofs on the barrel and reciever and another small mark in front of the wp on the barrel. i have never seen this on a win. barrel before. gun is in very good over all con. with a ex. bore. as i want it to shoot it, the replaced barrel(if it was) will not keep me from buying it, but i would like buy it at a better price if indeed it was replaced. thanks eastbank.

  A Model 1894 in the 233xxx serial range should not have proof marks on it. That said, it should be researched through the Cody Firearms Museum to see if it was returned after July of 1907.
