1863 Springfield conversion Question

I have a 1863 stamped Springfield rifle with a 1873 stamped (looks like 1878)trapdoor. I assume this is one of the conversions that was converted from .58 to .50. I have no idea, just trying to find out info. I would also like to find out if parts are available for this rifle. It has been in the closet long enough.

    It's a Trapdoor enthusiast's site. Be advised that you will have to post quality photos and specific description of all markings and missing/broken parts on the rifle for them to provide any meaningful help.

    With those markings, your gun is not a conversion from .58 to .50 but rather a .45-70. Some of the parts, such as your 1863 marked sideplate, were from Civil War surplus. Other parts, such as the breach block and barrel, are new manufacture for that model.

    You can get any part needed for a trapdoor from Keith at www.trapdoors.com. The vast majority of his parts are original, not reproductions.

    Thanks, that helps alot, I will look at both of those sites. I have been looking at this rifle since I was a boy and decided to do something with it.
