gunstock crack repair

I just bought a Husqvarna Model 456 with a mannlicher stock. Stock had seen better days but metal is primo. I gentley pulled the action out of the stock when it cracked between the magazine well and trigger well. I've tried to glue it back with a name brand waterproof wood glue but won't hold it. Going to bed the action and heard that acura glass makes good crack repair. Can somebody advise?[?]

    acraglass is great for stock repair. stock repair pins might help in your situation also

    There is a book available at Barnes and Noble Called : Gunsmithing Rifles. Author details several ways to repair cracked stock as well as do's and dont's. I think the book has helped me and would probably be worth the money. Covers many types of rifles including how to build your own from a mauser surplus.

    if cracks are close to the middle i cut a groove across the stock all the way across with a dremel tool. i make the groove as large as possible usually about 3/8 inch. i cut a piece of threaded rod a bit shorter than the inside of the stock and use acraglass or other good slow setting epoxy to permanently secure it. the stock has to be held in a vise to keep crack closed until epoxy sets. i have used this repair on some very large caliber rifles and have not had one break.

    great article. i was so disheartened when the stock cracked, and my glue job failed. i put two coats of danish tongue oil after I stripped the stock. The wood isn't exhibition but looks real real good.quote:Originally posted by fshfndr

    For inbeds into stock repairs I now use fiberglass rod rather than metal. Fiberglass is as strong as need be, slightly flexible & accepts epoxy type glues better than metal and is not as affected by external conditions such as heat, magnetism, etc. I rough up the glueing surfaces before the repair to improve adhesion. Fiberglass cloth is good for flat reinforcements such as in barrel channel splits. The cloth is used for boat repairs & get it from boat supplies sellers, also maybe from auto parts places. Rod is available as ramrods and being a cheapskate, I save old fishing rods. I say old fishing rods because in recent times they tend to be hollow.

    First time users should experiment on something other than their first gun job.

    The glas that is more of a liquid than the gel is better for getting into all the little nooks and crannys in a busted stock...... do it up right and it will be as good as new...
