Stevens 311 series H

I inherited a Stevens 311 SxS and when I take the forearm off to break the weapon apart, it will not budge. Don't know how long this has been sitting around in a cellar but I don't want to force it and screw it up. Could I hit the muzzle end with a dead blow or a rubber mallet to try to release it? Also when the action is closed the release lever is not centered in the wrist of the gun but is offset to the right (a lot) Should I be concerned? No telling if this has been played with because the person I got it from was known to be a "tinkerer". The gun is in really good shape otherwise. Case color on the receiver is perfect and around 95% bluing on barrels etc. Serial no# is B7420xx , I think from the sixties, but not sure.

    Thanks Henry. Just so you know , I can open the action with the forearm off but the barrels won't separate from the receiver. If I am misinterpreting your answer please let me know.

    Spray some PB Blaster on the pin and try to slide the barrels toward you.

    When you remove the forearm, what position is the release lever in ? Furtherest right is the release position to break free the action from the barrels.

    What happens if you fiddle with the release lever in the opposite direction? I take it the hinge pin allows free movement?

    Got it! It must have been sitting around for a while without a breakdown of any kind. After letting it sit overnight with some penetrating oil on there it came apart- but reluctantly- found lots of goop in there. Thanks everyone
