Buying "Black Rifle"

Have been looking at AR style rifles and would like advice.
Is the S&W a good gun? I see so many guns with Mfg A upper and Mfg B lower etc...I'm lost and can't get good advice locally.
This will be a shooter/car gun for defensive use in 5.56mm.
Any and all help appreciated.

    Yes, S&W is a good gun. I find them a bit pricey though. I prefer Rock River Arms guns, I have 3 of them. You can find them on the auction side for about $1100.00. Any name brand AR is a good gun. Rock River, DPMS, Bushmaster, Colt, etc

    P228's advice is good.

    Yes, you can assembly a rifle from parts made by different manufacturers, but you will end up with a Mixed Parts Mongrel that has no factory warranty, & on which you will take a beating at resale. Stick to one new in the factory box, & you can't go wrong. Just take your time so you can find the configuration that meets your needs best.

    You can get some good information from the Fulton Armory website. Also, consider buying a copy of The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide by Walt Kuleck, an inexpensive paperback.

    You could buy the parts to put a AR together as a shooter for about 650.00, I don't know about the prices now. I have looked at a lot of and read about them and there is nonthing bad about thess rifles, just make sure you do your home work before you buy the parts.

    I think its not true anymore.

    Top end kits and parts have skyrocketed in price since the Obama election and most places are sold out and backordered.

    I'm told you can't put together any AR-15 anymore for under $750, and at this point you'd even be lucky to do that.

    I do NOT think this shortage will last forever, as all of the manufacturers have geared up to increase supplies. Though it probably will take a few months to a year before the supplies catch up with the demand.

    I think the first question you need to ask yourself is what do you want the gun for. SHTF? plinking? Fun in the backyard? ect.
