Savage package rifle
I have what I believe to be one of Savage's famous(infamous????) package rifles topped wit a Simmons scope.I recently purched a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9 to replace the Simmons.My question is should I replace the rings and bases at the time of installation???Any recomendations????

What caliber is it? I had a .325 wsm and the rings wouldn't hold the scope in place. Tried everything. I would definitely replace them if I was you. I have found that a good set of rings are just as important as a decent scope.
On the plus side, them rings & scope make a very good and nice looking setup for something smaller like a .22, etc.

I much prefer a set of Leupold rings or something similiar because I trust them a lot more. Best advice I can give you, is if you really don't want to replace them, take the rifle out and see how it shoots. If it shoots fine and the scope doesn't move, no need to replace them anyways. If it can't hold the scope in place or your not happy with your groups(even if scope isn't moving) maybe try a better set. Enjoy your rifle and new scope!

i have 4 other savages i know alot of others save your time the first time replace the rings.... 0 -
If the rings match the tube you should be ok. Assuming nothing is stripped. I would make sure you have a gap in the rings after you tighten it. If you do you should be ok. 0 -
The rifle itself is a rock solid performer, but I never liked the bases, rings, nor the scopes they used in their package deal. I would replace both the base(although it is a weaver style) and rings with something made of STEEL.
