Winchester 1873 Lever Action:
How much side to side motion (slop, play) should the lever have? what is considered excessive? How do you tighten up that play?

  As originally built, it should have almost zero side-to-side slop.
  
  I have no answer for your second question, and it is not possible to answer your third question without diagnosing which part(s) is/are worn excessively.
