ultralight shotgun

a friend and myself have been playing around with ideas designing a "bug out bag", the idea with the shotgun is to be a versatile, lightweight, and potentially effective self defense weapon.

in a survival situation, walking around with an M14 and hundreds of rounds of ammo would certainly be comforting should a hoard of zombies rush you... but realisticly, any weapon would mostly be dead weight.

any ideas or suggestions regarding a superlightweight shotgun? am i limited to a single shot or can i afford a pump while still being very packable and light?

    Mossberg 500 or 590 would be a good and light pump.

    I also love my Franchi AL48 which would be light and a semi auto. If you bought a barrel and sawed it down, it could be very short as well.

    There are some class III pump 12 g pump shot PISTOLS that are out there- made AS a pistol, they are classed as AOWs (any other weapon) and have a Federal transfer tax of $5, not the $200 of a Short Barreled Shotgun.

    HOWEVER- they are about 3 shot max, have significant recoil, and any large amount of ammo is VERY heavy.

    If you get the Mossberg 500, get a 20g; since it's a full 2 pounds lighter than the 12g.

    A shotgun is the most versatile personal weapon but the trouble with shotguns in a survival scenario is weight and bulk of ammunition.
    An AR15 with lightweight barrel can be assembled to weigh six pounds or less, ammo weight and bulk is much less, 20 & 30 rd mags give you good firepower and can be carried better, the gun breaks down small. Shorter barrels put you into Class Three territory and are very noisy even with suppressors.
    A 10-22 with a few 50 rd mags and light folding stock might be a good idea.
    Noise has to be a consideration. If you have to pop off a few zombie scouts you wont want to draw fire from the whole mob.

    Sile (and one or two others IIRC) made a very light 20ga or 410 O/U that would break open as normal but actually would fold in half if you went far enough.

    If you went with single shot, you could get an H&R handirifle in some rifle caliber, then have a shotgun barrel fitted to it.

    any shotgun with an alloy receiver. then, the only thing to deal with is the weight of the ammo in the gun.[;)]
