Kel-Tec P3AT

I was wondering if anyone had experience with Kel-Tec's P3AT 380ACP? I'm looking for a good pocket gun as a back up to my conceled carry gun which is a Glock 32 357sig. Any opinions or other sugestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Anyone else having problems with the magazine releasing during firing? My guns accuracy is great but I'm about ready to unload it. Confidence is key ! The way I normally grip a weapon is causing the release to hit my thumb during firing which releases the mag so no follow up shot 3-4 times out of 10 . I really have to try to change my normal grip and concentrate on a very firm grip holding my thumb high which is awkward. 2 of my friends experienced the same thing firing this weapon. The release I think could be stiffer.My opinion but its not. I emailed KEL-TEC and all they said was change my grip. Anyone else having problems?

    You might try filing the button down almost level with the grip. You can still pop the mag easy enuf with your thumbnail. I did it but for a different reason. My mag button kept being pushed when the gun was in my pocket, bumped or sat on it or something.

    Never had this problem personally, but I could easily see it happening.

    I hate to say it, but Kel Tec is probably right here. There is no real "fix" to this problem other than you not hitting the mag release while shooting!

    Sanding down the mag release button to make it less prominent isn't a bad idea.

    As another less drastic suggestion, one of those finger-grooved Hogue "Handall jr." type grip sleeves might help you re-adapt your grip so this isn't a problem anymore.

    In an case it would certainly help you get a better grip.

    IIRC these work a little better on this particular gun if installed upside down. You also may have to trim a teeny bit with a pair of scissors so it doesn't overlap at the bottom of the gun.

    The plastic mag catch gets beat up and will release during firing without hitting the button. KelTec will send you a new mag catch.
    One of the guys who posts on the KTOG website makes up steel mag catches.
    Mag finger extensions are nice but put a downward force on the mag,
    exacerbating the problem.
    Currently, I don't use them for that reason.

    v35 is right on. I had this same problem last year and Kel Tec sent me a replacement at no charge. I have looked on the KTOG forum and could not find the guy who is selling the metal catches. Maybe you will have better luck.

    DaveNC is the user on KTOG who mills and sells metal release catches for both the P32/P3AT and the P11/P40. He used to have an ad, he is now on the Trading Post but you do have to have 25 posts to access the trading post, if you do not I am sure you can send him a PM through the KTOG system or let me know, I can try and find an e-mail. I think he sells them for $30 or $40 dollars, CNC machined all metal catches.
    I use a Handall jr and have a plastic catch that has been sanded down, I have never had an issue and do use the mag finger extensions.
