This was to keep the firearm most times a shorter Carbine from falling and getting lost or damaged when on horseback . Think about reloading and riding a horse at the same time. Calvary troops. Same with Lanyard loops on pistols.

Thankyou, Perry shooter. All the movies I've seen just never saw anyone untying or unstrapping, being used in any way. But I know, it was the movies.
Is that as in "Camp Perry?

Congrats on a great shooting career.
My only claim to fame (ha) was placing 1st in our platoon during boot camp rifle firing qualification. I fired a 232 out of 250 qualified as expert rifleman. That is out of a field of 80. With a very sloppy feeling action on a wore out M-14. We were one of the last platoons to qualify with the M-14. At least for "Hollywood Marines"
That was back in Aug. 1972 Platoon 1097.

When you carried a rifle on horse back, the rifle was put into a leather scabbard and secured with a leather thong tied through the saddle ring on the side of the rifle.

    53hawkeye,

As has been said, the saddle ring was used to keep the rifle with its owner/ user. A carbine sling is what the horse soldier wore:

    http://www.rollanet.org/~stacyw/us_1885_carbine_sling.htm

The muzzle of the rifle was stuck into a carbine socket, that was mounted to the saddle:

The modern version of the carbine sling:

Big loop and all. Man that wa s a great education. I could watch the history channel all day sometime and not get all that.
All this reminded me of a joke. See telephone man (humor) on general discussion forum from this afternoon. He could have used a saddle ring.
    Happy shootin'
