date of 16ga 2 9/16" guns

I friend showed me his Iver Johnson 16ga Champion shotgun that is not ejecting fired shells. The chamber is very dirty and I told him I would clean and polish it to help with ejection. After looking at it again, it is very old(no sn) and I wonder if it might be chambered for 2 9/16" shells. Can anyone give me a date when 2 3/4" became standard? Thanks Don

    Hello Don,

    I do not know when Iver Johnson made the switch from a 2-9/16" chamber to the now standard 2-3/4" chamber, but I can tell you when Winchester made the change. For the Winchester Model 12, the change occurred in 1927. For the Model 97, the change was made in 1931. It is very likely that most other manufacturers made the change in the same timeframe.

    "it is very old(no sn)".........the bottom tang should have several letters, this is the ser. # (I've got one that's 'rffr', this translates to 8118) another poster here informed us they used "fitchburg" as the ser. no. base (x=0)
