selling a firearm to someone out of my state

Hello, My brother want's to purchase a firearm and lives in North Carolina. I live in New York and have my FFL. How do I go about selling him a new firearm (shotgun)from my supplier. Does he fill out the paperwork at a dealer in North Carolina? And, I probably need to ship the weapon to a dealer down there correct?

    You must ship the firearm to a ffl dealer in his state residence. He then will go to the dealer, do the paperwork and after the NICS check, take possession of the firearm. As I see it you will order the firearm, pay shipping to get it to you, someone pays shipping to get the firearm to NC then pay the dealer to do the receiving and paperwork in NC. It seems that it would be no more expensive to go to a NC dealer and buy a gun from him. Doing it the way described might save sales tax. What sales tax is due to the state of NC is debatable and probably will be debated when this post is read.

    Some distributors will "drop ship" the gun; that is, you pay for it & they will ship anywhere you want. In this case, to your brother's dealer.

    Or, if your brother visits you, you can do a face-to-face as long as that is legal in both NC & NY.

    Face to face is legal in nc but I am not sure about the driving across all the state lines.

    A long gun (shotgun was the question) can be sold face to face to the resident of any state per Fed law. If he can legally possess it in NY, and in NC, he COULD come visit you, take delivery of the shotgun AFTER you do the 4473 and NICS check. He can then take the shotgun, lock it in his trunk, and drive home to NC (See the Federal Law known as Peaceable Traveler- trumps state law)

    Or, as the man said several posts earlier- find a NC FFL holder that will recieve it from you, and transfer it to brother- after HE does the 4473, NICS, etc. And on the home page of gunbroker is a link to FIND A FFL.
