You were told correct. That serial number puts it in the 4th change period. There were 758,296 made between 1915 & 1942.
Its listed in the S&W book as ".38 Military & Police Model of 1905 - 4th change".0 -

You could contact S&W as Bill said. You also could extrapolate from the serial numbers.
Ser # 241704 was made in 1915 and 1000000 was made in 1942. That would mean about 29,085 were made per year for the 27 year period.
There is a difference of about 31,500 guns made from the beginning of the run to your gun. A WAG or (wild ass guess) would be 2732XX was made around 1916 or 1917.
