30/40 Krag -- Mosin-Nagant
First I would like to thank those who gave advice on previous question. Armed with model nos. I was able to go online and check history. It looks to me like I will get a Mosin-Nagant 91 and either a 30/40 Krag or a 1903 Springfield. I'm leaning towards the Krag. I know what to look for in a modern rifle but other than a good bore I'm not sure what to look for in 100 year old rifles. Is there anything in particular I should look for in these rifles? Such as known potential defects, areas of weakness, etc.

One potential defect of Krags is that they have 1 locking lug and if someone has hot-rodded one on reloads this lug is known to crack. I've never seen it but it is an occasional issue, so examine the bolt on any gun you buy. It's not dangerous if you use factory ammo or proper handloads, but it just takes one idiot overpowering it.
For springfields you'd want to look at the serial number. The 'low numbered' springfields used an inferior heat treatment and aren't safe to shoot. Look for a Springfield above 800,000 in serial number or a Rock Island above 256,506; after that they changed heat treatment to a safer process.
No issues for any Mosins.0
