"The Judge" in CA
Since it has legal consequences for the fellow returning to CA, I just wanted to add a post clarifying that the Taurus "The Judge" mentioned in the attached thread:

is illegal in CA & is (in CA) classified as a short barreled shotgun. It may also be an assault weapon (CA lists a shotgun with a revolving cylinder as being an "assault weapon") but considering the SBS classification I've not looked into its AW status too much.
Constructive possession applies to an SBS in CA, which is to say you can't separate the cylinder from the frame or possess one or the other only & be OK. I have a Bond derringer, the 410/45 LC barrel can not be possessed in CA, same goes for a T/C barrel in that chambering.
There's no reason for folks in "normal" states to routinely know this bit of CA law, I mention it only because I wouldn't want the OP to find a great deal on one & land in CA with a liability on his hands.

No matter how right you were, I'd sure hate to walk into a courtroom - especially in California - after having shot someone with a gun known as a 'Judge'. 0 -

No, because it was not manufactured (or remanufactered, etc) to accept a fixed shotgun cartridge.0 -

Not to worry - CA residents are moving north as we speak, taking over Ashland and Medford and Grants Pass. Like an annoying little disease. Personally, I've always considered it the height of arrogance to move to another state and tell the long timers what to do. As a NH resident, I had to deal with the MA folks coming north and developed a healthy dislike for such poor form.0 -
I thought the presence of rifling defined whether or not it was a shotgun. 0
