Good morning, I just acquired this gun yesterday and am not a very knowledgeable Model 94 kind of guy. Basically, wonder what the value might be on this gun. It's definitely been used. Many dings in the stock and most of the blueing is gone. Hopefully, the pictures will show on the barrel and the right sideplate, very minor pitting which can be seen but not felt. Serial #968881 (1924?) All screws appear to be original and in excellent condition (slot not buggered). Rear sight is stamped Marbles, Gladstone, Michigan USA (original?) Barrel is stamped 30-30 WIN and bore is in excellent condition. Lever movement is smooth and normal to my thinking. So, what do you think?     The serial number (968881) does make it an early 1924 production Model 94. However, if the barrel is marked "30-30 WIN", it is not original to the gun. Winchester did not begin using the "30-30 WIN" marking until the year 1950. If you remove the forend stock and look on the bottom of the barrel, you might find a 2-digit year date code. If it does not have a 2-digit date code, it was made sometime after 1954.

    With a non-factory original barrel, and the saddle ring missing, it is at best a $350 gun.

    Hello to Bert, or Airdale. Can you tell me what the original cartridge was for this S. N. ??? Also, is there a chance in h--l. that I could find a period correct Bbl for this gun S.N. is 968881. Would I lower the value on this gun if I lightly used 0000 steelwool, and oil to clean it up??? THX in advance. Hawkshaw

    No, it is not possible to say which caliber/cartridge that it was originally chambered for. Serial 968881 could have been any one of the five different cartridges Winchester offered at that time (25-35 W.C.F., 30 W.C.F., 32 W.S., 32-40, or 38-55).

    No, you would not lower the value by cleaning it up as you describe.
