Longest range sniper kill
I just watched a history channel special on accuracy. They said the longest confirmed sniper shot was 1 1/2 miles!! 2500 yards!! Anyone know if that is true, and what the cartridge was?

I remember when they told us a sniper had taken someone at nearly 2600yds with a M82 50cal. Then they told us he was a Canadian. Man were we pissed!

McMillan TAC-50 is manually operated, rotary bolt rifle. Huge, full-size bolt has dual front locking lugs, and its body has spiral flutes to reduce weight. Heavy match-grade barrel is also fluted, and fitted with effective muzzle brake. Rifle is fed from detachable box magazines, holding 5 rounds each. Stock is made from fiberglass by McMillan Stocks, and is designed to be used from bipod only. Buttstock is adjustable for length of pull with rubber spacers, and can be folded to the side or removed for compact storage. Rifle has no open sights and can be used with a variety of telescopic or night sights; in Canadian service, standard sight is 16X telescope.

If I did it right, that's about a 40' drop. Lots of math and windage in that shot... and a little luck. 0 -
I believe that it was a Canadian attached to a US sniper unit. According to a citation I got from Google, his first shot missed, the second shot hit the Taliban in the backpack, and his third shot hit him in the torso.

The one that Carlo's Hathcock did was pure luck by his own admission in more ways than one. His victim stopped to do something...in the exact spot Carlos had zeroed the weapon prior to the sweep starting. He came out, Carlos recognized the situation and let fly....technically with a first round hit.
It's not always yardage though. I still say his 1500 yd. shot on a NVA general, in unknown territory and alone, from a prone/unsupported position was the real deal. Then had to egress with search parties all around him. Even almost stepping on him!0 -
