I traded guns and ended up with modified U S rock island arsenal
30-06.
My gun book (firearms catalog) advises that serial numbers prior to 800,000 were not safe to use modern ammo in do to insufficient heat treating. My serial no. is 377099. What do you think? Is it safe to shoot? Can it be reheat treated if not? If so by whom. Thanks

    It will never be anything other than a neat wall-hanger.

    Other than replacing the receiver with one outside that s/n range, nothing can be done.

    If you sell it to someone without informing them of this, and the person fires it, and it explodes, injuring someone - and it can be proven that you were aware of this - you could be in for criminal charges.

    I'd return it to the person/place I got it, for a full refund.

    Please, please, don't shoot it.

    The 800,000 cut off is for '03s made at the Springfield Arsenal. Rifles made at the Rock Island Arsenal are OK at about serial number 250,000. You're fine - fire away.

    I thought that cut-off was at the 1,000,000 range for Springfield production?

    High numbered Springfields are above 800,000. High numbered Rock Islands start at 285,507.
