It depends on the type of gun & what county you live in.

It depends if you are acquiring a gun from that individual or disposing of one to him. The former, I think if you do not know the individual, I would want to at least know the name and address of the person and have a copy of his/her drivers license. I would then check with the local LEO's and see if the firearm in the transaction was involved elswhere in a crime...there should be a number for this to call.

If the latter, then the usual 4473 form needs to be filled out by the buyer and a NICS check done.

In both cases the FFL holder should record the transaction in the log book.

Every place I've been they use the info on the form for the NICS call, after checking your ID.

So I will need form 4473 for shotguns, rifles and handguns?

Seems an awful lot like we already have mandatory registration.

If you are a FFL holder, you will ned a 3 ring binder for your 4473 forms, and an ATF accepted log book. Are you an FFL holder?

No, I'm possibly interested in buying a firearm here on gunbroker and just wanted to know what the requirements were if/when I needed to pick up a purchase from a local FFL dealer. Apparently for all guns (yes?) I will need to fill out form 4473 and basically register them with the dealer I used as a middleman. To me that seems a lot like registration.

Its not registration as long as 1) your dealer doesn't go out of business and 2) the feds don't show up with a warrant or other reason to take the 4473.

To have a firearm TRANSFERRED thru a license holder, whether buying it, having it shipped to you from out of state, etc, the licensed person (FFL holder) has to do the same things. That includes verifying adequate ID, form 4473 WHICH HE RETAINS at his place of business, doing the NCIS background check, etc.
