what kind of takedown?
I have finally gotten a little time to breathe since starting selling down my collection.
Anyhow, nononsense explained a project to me about some work he did in the recent past putting together some 6mm/.223's. I then got this wild idea of 'what if you wanted to switch back and forth and make it a takedown?'
So with that, all you gunsmith types, and wannabe's like me, might weigh in on what kind of takedown you would build if you did such a project.
My first thought was to get three extra barrels chambered, threaded and profiled like my Savage .250-3000. One in .22-250 another in .300 Savage and another in .358 Win. That would pretty much cover my bases as far as calibers but doesn't really have any big rounds I can use. Nor would I want to take the pressures up too high in the cases I did select. The '99 is a great gun but I'm not too sure I want to push pressures in it.
Second I was thinking of using a CZ 527 or 550 and either going three .222/.223 based cases such as 6mm/.223 TCU's etc. Or, go with the calibers named above in a 550. This is where the important question comes to mind is how you make the takedown. Do you do it like a '99 where the tenon is threaded or 'lugged' and is held in place by a longitudinal key, or do you screw it in and pin it crosswise in a hole drilled/reamed to match barrel to receiver for headspace. Lastly in this is do you use a system like the Savage bolt style that screws the barrel in on a go/no go guage and headspace it that way then tighten the nut down?
Third, as mentioned above use the Savage method of attaching the barrel and go with 3-4 caliber choices that share case head.
This gets me to thinking though about how difficult it would be to build a carrier/switchable bolt head to switch with the barrel so you could go all the way from a .22 Hornet to a .460 Weatherby magnum. you would obviously need a detacheable magazine to hold the smaller shells. This whole principle is done by the Mauser M03. I'm wondering if anyone might have a better idea?

Good to see you back on the boards my friend. Hope you didn't sell off too much of your collection. Actually I have done the same to get rid of the things I have not used in years, unless they have sentimental value.
As for your take down....
Exactly what would you like to do with this?
Want to go from 22 Hornet to the RUM's?
I like Winchesters interupted thread designs for the takedown ease, but have problems imagining that type with high intensity rounds.
You might want to look at the Blaser type rifles that the bolt actually locks up in the barrel, or should I say the bold recesses are machined into the barrel. To go from big to small cartridge is just a change of barrel, bolt, and magazine. Otherwise you are stuck with a common head size, and possibly custom magazine followers for different case lengths....examples being the RUM, RSAUM, WSM, and WSSM cases, and of course the standard belted magnums would work on that bolt also.
Fire me an e-mail with some of your idea's. Also make sure you talk to nononsense. He is the Grand Master at tinkering with these type of things.
