Check out auction #122095287. Hogg Man states he is going to list a 6.5 mag this week.

Ammo will be an issue, but if I were to build my own 6.5 Rem Mag. I would build on a Savage action. Everything is readily available and reasonably priced. I believe the cheapest route would be to rechamber a type 38 Arisaka.

it's going to be a reloading issue, but other than that just hunt up a suitable action (I would prefer a long action) if it's a magnum you wont need to do any bolt work, and the rails will be OK for feeding, a short action unless it's from a 6.5 Magnum, or the new SAUM's will need a lot of work to feed right, and there is the bolt to deal with...

    wolf,
FYI; Factory loads (120 gr.) from the 22" barrel of my 6.5 Rem. Mag. chronograph 2900 fps and the groups are not good. It does much better with handloads but does not come up to the performance level of a .270. Still, it's different and, like you, I had to have one. Maybe yours will work out better.

    Ambrose,
That is interesting. I agree on the factory ammunition part, but there are other ammo makers who will work up a load for this chambering such as Superior Ammunition. I don't plan to handload. Everything I have read about the 6.5 Mag praises its long-range accuracy and efficiency (but out of a 24 inch barrel and using good loads). Chuck Hawks really praises this round, as do many other well-known riflemen. You are the first I have heard otherwise. Anyone else care to share their results??

I am not sure...but if Remington chambered their Model 700 Classic in 6.5 Rem Mag...it should pass your excellent standards.

Seems like I'm the guy with the alternate ideas around here.
So, if I were you and I didn't like the Rem. offerings, I would condider heading toward a .260 Rem., a 6.5x.284, or a 6.5x06. All of these have a .473 rim dia. Which will make your life easier. Then you can get into your purpose for building this rifle. The 6.5 mag usually comes with to short a Bbl. And being a belted case, usually will not yield terrific accuracy. Some things to consider are: Purpose target---hunting, prefered bullet weight, twist etc. Good luck it's a fun quest. HAWKSHAW

I'm pretty sure Remington didn't chamber their Classic for 6.5 mag. (never say never). But Ruger made some of their 77's for it a while ago. I haven't seen one for sale in a while now and they were pretty high-priced but a good bit less than the 2,000 you mentioned in your origional post. Just a thought.

hawkshaw-- get the headspace off the belt and on the shoulder where it belongs and you'll see a noticeable increase in accuracy...
