Ruger Bearcat
Hey guys. I have a Ruger Bearcat with the serial number 1774 but everything I've ready sort of confuses when I try and date it. Anyone know what year this piece was manufactured. It's definitely the older model. With such a low serial number...is it a first run? I can take pictures if needed but didn't know/think it was necessary.

We just obtained a Ruger Bearcat with the serial #970**** (it looks like). It also has a Brass finger guard. Would you possibly know when it was made?

It could be the way you're shooting. Try printing this:

2" high and a tad to the left ain't bad for the first time out with a new revolver. you just got it and you have to it shoot more. bench or vise it to eliminate you as the variable. also have others run a few cylinders and see how they fare. ammo is a big variable too, so try some different brands. enjoy that little 6 shooter! 0 -
Its...I'm assuming by the serial # it is a 1972 model. New for me ...Yes. Also I shoot roughly 5000 rds a year in .22lr pistols (mostly a Buckmark). Could it be me?? It very well could be but not likely. The Bearcat is the smallest revolver I have shot other than a NAA mini master .17. We won't get into that. I'll try a target from a rifle rest I have and report back today. The Bearcat will primarily be a trapline dispatch gun and accuracy would not be of utmost importance but I may like to plink a rabbit every now and then also.

I've got a newer one -- stainless.
Ruger put the stainless Bearcat in their
catalog (was it sometime in the mid-90s),
but never produced it initially.
When they actually started producing it
some years later, I grabbed one the first
one I saw.
It is one of the most fun plinking guns
I own.
It shoots as accurately as I can aim, so
your performance is not consistent with my
personal experience.
If yours is a 1972 model, how much use has
it seen? Could wear someplace affect "aim"?
If it is a mis-aligned sight issue, I
think your repair options are to learn to
shoot "compensating" for the sights, or
start bending.0 -
Ok...I'm almost ashamed to post this, but I said I would and try to be a man of my word (anyone got crow?).
A little touch of paint on the front blade corrected the shooting high. All shots were made from a rest, no wind, and at 41 feet. The orange target is 3" and the squares are 2". Gun was cleaned very well and doesn't seem to have any problems other than a little rust on the hammer and holster wear. Cylinder is tight in safe and fire position and the bore looks very good. I really wanted this gun to shoot the CB's for the above mention reason but I'm sure at 2 feet or less it would be fine.

I have 2 older Bearcats, a regular Bearcat and a Super Bearcat. I use them for plinkers so I have never sat down and shot groups with them.
They are not especially accurate. I would just suggest trying several brands of ammo and stick with the one that gives the best groups.0 -
lookin good Salem! shoot that little bugger some more so you get used to it's "Kentucky windage" as competentone mentioned and you might smoke the Browning's groups.[:D] Enjoy!

I had one of the original alloy frame Bearcats that was pretty inaccurate with Long Rifle rounds, but shot very well with Shorts. I always supposed it was due to the little gun's light weight. 0 -
maybe try some CB long instead of the CB shorts would be a little less bullet jump and i've found the longs to be just as quite as the shorts maybe even more so 0 -
Well I put about 250 rounds threw the Bearcat today without much improvement. Of course most of the rounds were sweetgum balls, pine cones, and a few Christmas tree light bulbs (the wife wanted them untangled and put up, so I figured I'd remove the bulbs first). I got to where I was doing pretty good at compensating as "competetone" had mention. As far as my intended purpose I think it will do just fine. Going after a few rounds of .22's Wednesday and will try a couple more different makes. If any improvements I will post here later.
