saiga milled or stamped?
How do I know if a saiga 7.62 x 39mm rifle is milled or stamped? I really do not understand the terms. Is it how engraving is on the gun like the importer name.

They use a stamped sheet metal receiver. Engraving looks fine heck of alot better than the electric pencil used on the wasr's. [;)] 0 -
Stamped = folded piece of sheet metal in to a receiver shape.
Milled = solid piece of metal that was machined into the receiver shape.
I am 99% sure all Saiga's are stamped.0 -
...Nothing to do with the lettering/numbers on a barrel, or wherever.
...Im no Saiga expert but..."milled" is the reciever, side plates, the important parts, would mean these parts are machined from solid stock...there are other parts that can be milled too but the reciever is the part most are concerned/care with. Milled can apply to ANY gun, so can stamped...though "stamped" is usually referred to when speaking of rifles vs handguns; except handgun sideplates.
...Stamped is usually where the side plates/reciever is literally "stamped" from a sheet of metal, NO machining...stamped like with a cookie cutter if you will.
...Machined is better, and heavier...it is also much more, time consuming, exspensive...Im thinking the Saiga is not milled but stamped, quicker and cheaper.
...One of the more famous "stamped" guns was the Grease Gun....45acp sub gun of WWII. Stamping is CHEAPER by far than machining a part from solid stock steel...but a lot of dead German's would agree that "stamped" gets the job done...[^]

Mine is stamped, and I believe that all their AK variants are. They were when I bought it, anyway.
Milled is not necessarily from a solid block. It can be a receiver that is milled (machined) from a casting or a forging. Stamped is, as noted previously, a receiver that is formed from sheet metal and welded or riveted. The stamped receivers will have a number of convolution stamped into them to add stiffness.
You can look at previous threads comparing the two. Milled will be more expensive, but the jury truly is out if there is any real overall advantage to a milled receiver over a stamped one.0 -
All the ones I have seen have been stamped, wich means it was folded by metal presses.. some people seem to think milled recievers wich are heavier and thicker tend to be more rigged during fireing, causeing the rifle with a milled reciever to be more accurate.. Quite a few of the siaga rifles I have seen have more rebust recievers then the average stamped ak, similar to the ones on the long barreled RPK. 0 -
I fully understand the difference in milled and stamped receivers. You people have provided very good explanations. The electric pencil graving in the WASR's is a huge turn off to me. 0
