Choke markings on Browning shotguns
Hi, experts. Browning uses a star or asterisk * on shotgun barrels to note the choke, they do not use the terms full, modified or cylinder, etc. I've seen one, two and three stars on barrels, but I don't know what choke they represent. Anybody know the code? Thanks Jim

Hello Jim,
The choke is marked on the left side of the barrel, and it appears as follows;
* = Full Choke (F)
*- = Improved Modified (IM)
** = Modified (M)
**- = Improved Cylinder (IC)
**$ = Skeet (SK)
*** = Cylinder bore (CYL)0 -

Hello Jim,
I am first and foremost, a diehard John M. Browning disciple. His very first firearm patent was the Browning Single Shot rifle, which evolved into the Winchester Model 1885 Single Shot rifle. From his first patent on October 7th, 1897 to his dying breath in 1927, every thing that he invented is of tremendous interest to me. When you consider that he was the inverntor and patent holder of the Winchester Model 1892 lever-action rifle (more than a million made), the Model 1894 lever-action rifle (more than 8 million made), the Model 1897 Shotgun (more than a million made), the Browning Auto-5 shotgun (more than 2.5 million made), and the Colt 1911/1911A1 semi-auto handgun (millions made), it is not difficult to gain a high amount of respect for the man, and his guns.
So yes, I am a Winchester/Browning guy. There are a number of other types of old guns that I like too. Old SxS shotguns are interesting.0
