m 54 winchester scope mount ?

Does any one have any info on the availability or what out of production mounts to look for. I don't want to drill the rear receiver ring.
I keep hearing about an older mount that attached to two holes in the front receiver ring and on the Lyman hole in the side of the rear ring.
Any help would be greatly appreciated [?]

    You need the Stith Streamline Mount, if you don't want to drill holes. It is also known as the Install It Yourself Mount. It can be mounted using the two factory drilled holes in the receiver, and by the rear-sight dovetail. If you can't find one on GB, then try fleabay, they have them up for auction quite frequently.

    They are very good mounts. You will have to familiarize yourself with the different kind of scopes that might fit the mounts. One popular scope for this mount was the Lyman Alaskan 2.5x which has a tube diameter of .875 inch. Good luck to you.

    EDIT: I had a Stith Mount that fit the 3/4 inch tube, and it was mounted with a Weaver 29S, which is an excellent scope. Another excellent Weaver scope that fit this Stith mount was the Model 330, which was also in use as a sniper scope by our military.

    You might consider selling the 54 for its collectability value .. untouched, and then use the money to get a Model 70.

    Bausch & Lomb also made an adjustable mount that attached to those holes.

    I bought one of these STITH mounts several years ago to mount a scope on my Mod. 54 in .30 WCF. As I recall, it would have required altering the bolt handle and safety to clear the scope which I wasn't about to do. Also, since the rings aren't fully split into two pieces they require taking the scope apart to slide the rings over the tube unless you could find a scope with a straight 1" tube. I wound up using Weaver see-thru mounts and a Leupold compact scope with a small diameter eye piece. The bolt handle barely clears the scope. Since I only fire it at the range from a bench, this set up seems to work OK.

    jds56: You know, I forgot about the bolt handle, probably because the 54's that I have were all modified long before I acquired them. But didn't you have to drill & tap the receiver bridge, or had that already been done?

    kelseh: Bausch & Lomb made a straight tube 4X an also a variable 2 1/2-4X with a straight tube. I still see the variable quite often.

    Ambrose. No I did not drill and tap the rear receiver bridge but simply utilized the front two factory drilled holes and epoxied the rear base/ring to the bridge. Since it has low recoil this has never been a problem. It is fun to shoot and amaziingly accurate with cast bullets.

    Wow I sure am getting alot of ideas. I also received in the mail a Midway USA master catalog with large lists of mounts and rings. All that stuff makes me cazy. I think the Weaver see troughs with 2 piece mounts with epoxy on the rear would let me try it out maybe? I am a scope new guy sort of. I have rimfires with various setups and I am learning center fire set ups. The last time I fired a high power with a scope it was my dads 8mm Mauser with a 10 power Unertal when I was 12 years old ouch [:)] I still have the scope but not the Mauser.
